The biggest release of the week, we'd say, is M3GAN, the result of combining the DNA of the Child's Play movies with Black Mirror's Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too. A horror film that isn't exactly terribly scary or violent, M3GAN offers a pretty fun take on an already crowded genre.

M3GAN (digital)

Whatever you call her, Megan or M'tres'gan, the AI-assisted successor to the evil doll's throne is already proving to be a powerful icon. Delivering a decent message about not chalking up childcare to screens, this movie is a pretty over the top horror movie and not nearly as gory or violent as you might expect.

M3GAN (which sort of stands for Model 3 Generative Android) is a doll and Frankenstein's monstrous creation of Gemma (Get Out, Girls' Allison Williams) who needs help raising Cady (Violet McGraw) after a tragic accident. The only problem, though, is that M3GAN (voiced by Jenna Davis and played by Amie Donald) goes to great lengths to protect Cady.

And you already know that "M3GAN" is already a success because a sequel (M3GAN 2.0) is scheduled for January 17, 2025.

you (Netflix)

You People, the debut feature from black creator Kenya Barris, is about the culture shock at the heart of a budding relationship. With Ezra (Jonah Hill) and Amira (Lauren London) forgoing any semblance of a regular date, Ezra only really gets to know her parents because he's willing to propose. And so his black family will meet his Jewish family, which will trigger everyone's pressure points.

First of all, Amira's father (Eddie Murphy) isn't quite ready to call Ezra his son. Meanwhile, Ezra's parents (played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus and David Duchovony) don't really know how to talk to Amira without making everyone uncomfortable.

Shotgun Wedding (Prime Video)

Part traditional, big-budget rom-com (hello, Jennifer Lopez and Josh Duhamel) and part The White Lotus (the trailer above shows singer Jennifer Coolidge), Shotgun Wedding seems like chaos at best. total. Coolidge is Josh's mother, Carol, and after angering all the guests, she continues to be a nuisance when masked gunmen take the wedding hostage.

Filled with a strong supporting cast, including Lenny Kravitz, D'Arcy Carden, and Cheech Marin, Shotgun Wedding seems to be the rom-com for people who also want some explosions with their entertainment.

Lydia Tár (Cate Blanchett) is a rock star in the world of classical music. The first female conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic, and such an icon that she has published a new book called Tár no Tár, Lydia is a queen in her field. But, as 'Tár' points out from the start, a lot happens when the greats aren't looking. A whisper campaign about her misbehavior to alumni and social media posts that portray her as more antagonistic in class than she already is threatens to undo what Lydia has spent decades building.

An intense film that never requires audiences to see its central character as a true villain, "Tár" is a top contender for many Oscars for good reason. Blanchett's understated but commanding performance, for example, makes her a favorite for the Best Actress award.

Teen Wolf: The Film (Paramount Plus)

Sure, we're weeks away from the next full moon, but that's not stopping the return of the ever-renewed Teen Wolf series. And the good news is that much of the original cast is returning from the most recent series. That includes Crystal Reed as Allison Argent. Yeah, longtime fans might just cock their heads and say "huh?" saying. justly. This surprise is the kind of surprise that will hopefully lessen any frustrations over Stiles Stilinski (Dylan O'Brien) not coming back.

Set years after the series finale, this movie will bring monsters galore to Beacon Hills. So expect Banshees, Werkoyotes, Hellhounds, Kitsunes, and more. It's not surprising that a massive new super-evil force threatens the peace, and it's entirely up to Scott McCall (the return of Tyler Posey) to rally many old friends to stop him.

Life upside down (digital)

After Better Call Saul is complete, we all need to find our Bob Odenkirk fix that we didn't know we needed. Enter Life Upside Down, a film about three couples whose lives weren't great before March 2020.

Odenkirk plays Jonathan, an artist who urgently needs to sell something as his gallery is in dire straits. And then, once the isolation begins, Jonathan's problems with his wife, as well as the problems of the two other couples they know they can't help, escalate.

El escondite (Shudder, AMC Plus)

While M3GAN is a horror movie that non-horror fans might enjoy, The Lair is definitely for horror movie fans. In The Lair, Royal Air Force pilot Lieutenant Kate Sinclair (Charlotte Kirk) is shot down over Afghanistan, only to find herself trapped in a secret, dark bunker inhabited by monsters. Or at least they look like monsters, as a military expert tells him that they are actually men.

Or, well, they were human. Directed by Neil Marshall (The Descent), The Lair seems to be full of emotion and also a bit of over the top energy.
